Sunset BLVD Hollywood - Relatively safe enough place to stay?

Were planning a trip soon and are thinking about the days in hollywood hotel near universal studios on sunset blvd, and if not that one, then the one on hollywood blvd near the walk of fame.. which one would you reccommend? we're trying to stay in a place that will make us feel as comfortable as possible and not have to feel like were going to get shot. Would this neighbourhood be okay for a couple of tourists? thanks.
