Living in Long Beach?

I'm planning on moving to long beach within the next couple months to attend csu long beach. I've visited the area several times but with things I've heard I'm a little paranoid about how safe living there will be? I'm planning on finding an apartment somewhere on ocean blvd closer to downtown, how safe is that area?
